Gaining Consumer Attention

According to a podcast from NPR called Understanding Unconscious Bias, “The human brain can process 11 million bits of information every second. But our conscious minds can handle only 40 to 50 bits of information a second.”

For that reason, as marketers, we often must compete for our consumer attention. You must be asking yourself, how can we do that? 

I’m here to tell you that it all starts with communication and an exceptional storytelling technique.

The Task

This is no easy task, to be able to have a successful story to tell your consumers/customers, gain their attention, and ensure they understand your message a framework needs to be followed. 

  1. We need to identify who is the protagonist of our story and know everything we can about them, and in most cases, it should always be your customer.
  2. Identify what is their problem, and what need needs to be fulfilled.
  3. Be the guide your customer needs to help them fulfill that need, be empathetic, and show credibility.
  4. Come up with a plan or solution.
  5. Ask them to follow your plan, and have a clear call to action!
  6. Show or tell them the story of the consequences of not following your lead, and how you can be the only one to help them with their vulnerability.
  7. Promise a resolution and show them what success looks like with you! 

Offering your customers, a unique solution and taking them on a journey of how your brand can help them with their problems with drive them to become loyal to your brand, and it all starts with telling a story.
